Often affects responsible, ambitious people who can “stretch” their resources and inner endurance for a long time.

How does it manifest?

  • Fatigue even after rest

  • Apathy

  • Cynicism

  • Decreased productivity

  • Emotional sensitivity

What causes it?

  • High responsibility

  • Lack of boundaries

  • Constant pressure

  • Ignoring bodily sensations

From a Jungian perspective, the part of our personality that we ignore or suppress (the shadow) can create a risk of burnout. For example, an ambitious manager may ignore their body and emotional signals because they think that “weakness,” the shadow aspect, must be suppressed. Over time, this accumulates stress and leads to burnout.

An inner balance between resources and external demands is essential. Boundaries should include regular rest and self-reflection. An honest relationship with oneself and one’s needs is important. Also, recognizing internal conflicts—when you feel you should keep working but your body says “no”—adds another layer of struggle.

How can vocal psychotherapy help with burnout?

  • Deep breathing is important, with elongated exhalations through sustained sound. The goal is to move from constant stress into a state of safety.

  • Long, vibrating sounds, shouting. It’s important to allow yourself to feel.

  • Identifying suppressed emotions.

    • How does anger sound in my body when I have too much?

    • How does sadness sound when I’m tired?

    • What is the voice of my helplessness?

  • Searching for the authentic voice. Allowing yourself to be heard.

It’s difficult to solve burnout in the mind alone, by creating discipline or adding control. Burnout is a problem of the body and nervous system, so it’s crucial to give special attention to the body. Let it speak—music can be an excellent foundation for this.
